Overview

Although being able to speak English means that we already know a great deal about how the language works, much of our knowledge is unconscious. This course will help you build a firm foundation of grammatical awareness, giving you the tools you need to identify, discuss and correct poor grammar and punctuation.

Who is it for?

This is a mid-level course that assumes a good working knowledge of the basics of grammar.

What will I learn?

The perfect introduction, Getting into Grammar will give you:


* a clear grasp of grammatical terms
* an understanding of how sentences work
* the knowledge to use punctuation effectively
* an awareness of some common pitfalls.

Programme

* The building blocks - word, phrase, clause, sentence
* Word classes - old and new terms
* Verbs
* Key elements in sentences: grammatical functions
* Key relationship - subject and verb
* Clauses and sentence types: simple, compound, complex
* It's or its? - the use and abuse of apostrophes
* How to use commas, semicolons, colons and dashes
* Some personal pronoun problems

How will I be assessed?

You will not be assessed, but will recieve a certificate of attendence.
