Overview

The Certificate in Appraisal of Dental Practices has been running successfully since 2004 and is a broad-based qualification relevant to a wide range of organisations and individuals. The course aims to enable the delivery of effective practice appraisal in a primary dental care setting using any appraisal or quality assurance system. This FGDP (UK) programme, leading to the award of the Certificate in Appraisal of Dental Practices, will allow for a more universal approach to quality assurance in primary dental care.

This programme is designed to:

● Train specialists and other team members to appraise the quality of clinical and non-clinical care delivered in the primary dental care setting
● Establish and maintain standards of practice appraisal.

Who is it for?

The course is open to all members of the dental team, including practice managers. It is particularly relevant for:
Suitable candidates
● Established practice assessors working in the quality assurance field
● Dental team members interested in quality assurance
● Dental vocational training advisors
● Primary Care Trust dental advisors
● Primary Care Trust employees (non-clinical)
● Dental body corporate dental advisors
● FGDP(UK) assessors/examiners
● Mentors overseeing under-performing teams

What will I learn?

On completion of the course, participants should be able to:
● Undertake effective practice appraisals using any recognised quality assurance programme
● Conduct the appraisal process with professionalism and sensitivity
● Provide constructive feedback to appraisees and appropriate agencies on their findings
● Provide accurate advice on all aspects of legislation, statutory requirements, good practice guidelines and GDC regulations

How will I be assessed?

Participants will be expected to undertake three practice appraisals in the nine month between the first two contact learning days and the third assessment day.

They will be expected to reach an acceptable standard for each of the four assessment tools:

1. Portfolio
2. Simulated scenarios
3. Practice feedback
4. Knowledge testing.

The course is usually held at The Royal College of Surgeons of England, 35-43 Lincolns Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3PE. The next course which begins in May 2010 will be held for the first time in Scotland, at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The Royal College of Surgeons of England is centrally located at Lincoln's Inn Fields within easy walking distance of Holborn (Piccadilly and Central lines) and Temple (District and Circle Lines) underground stations. It is a short taxi or underground journey from most major rail stations. Two NCP car parks are situated nearby.
