Overview

This course is designed for clinicians working in oncology and palliative care settings, whose role specifically includes the provision of psychological care for patients and carers. These practitioners will already be involved in assessing for psychological distress and providing
appropriate psychological and/or
supportive interventions. Delegates may already have an understanding of CBT and its application. However, this is not a requirement for attendance. The course is particularly suitable for those practising at Level 2 of the NICE Guidance in Supportive and
Palliative Care.

Who is it for?

Who should attend?
Senior and junior nurses
Senior and junior doctors
Allied Health Professionals
Counsellors, psychologists and social workers
Chaplains and spiritual care workers
All other health and social care professionals in end of life care

What will I learn?

The course aims to provide a detailed introduction to the cognitive model and illustrate how this model can help clinicians gain a better understanding of how emotional reactions to illness are shaped by underlying beliefs and characteristic coping strategies. A range of cognitive and behavioural skills will be considered, along with emotional/supportive techniques. With the changing course of physical illness, flexibility is required in the application of CBT techniques – consideration will be given to how clinicians may
select the most appropriate interventions to use in various situations. The time period between day 2 and 3 of the course is designed to allow
delegates to practise acquired skills in their various settings – the final day of the course will allow time for discussion about these experiences,
including how to manage any particular difficulties/challenges.
