Overview

The Basic Life Support (BLS) course equips participants with frontline life saving techniques in and out of the workplace. While the first minutes of a medical emergency are critical in sustaining life, it is during this crucial period that medical professionals are most often not available. This course is designed to enable participants to initiate interventions that can make the difference between life and death.

As well as the difference these skills could make with family, friends and members of the public, increasingly workplaces are looking for individuals who are capable implementing BLS. Indeed, it is required by law for many workplaces to have employees who are BLS certified. From lifeguards to warehouse and office workers, potential and current employers will recognise the value of employees with an HSE-recognised BLS certificate.

Who is it for?

Certified BLS skills are applicable in everyday life and across all employment industries. These include, but are not exclusive to:
- Office workers
- Childcare workers or anyone involved in the supervision and care of children
- Factory and warehouse workers
- Airport and aviation industry workers
- Hospitality industry workers
- Security and stewarding industry workers
- Nursing, allied health and medical staff
- Non-medical hospital workers

What will I learn?

• Definition of basic life support
• DRSABC: danger, response, shout, airway, breathing, circulation
• Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
• The care of an unconscious casualty
• The recovery position
• Dealing with choking and asphyxia
• Practical demonstration and use of resuscitation manikins
• Rationales behind interventions incorporated in BLS

How will I be assessed?
