Interpersonal Skills: understanding your impact on others and the impact of others on you
Attitude: flexibility; responsiveness; understanding the needs of the individual.
Listening Responses: conversation openers; passive listening; acknowledgement responses; reflective listening.
Voice and Manner: voice and personality projection; adapting your style to the situation
Assertiveness: challenging views specifically and directly without damaging relationships; advanced questioning.
Joint Problem Solving: how to increase the readiness of others to accept proposals; problem analysis; selection of the best course of action; using professional agencies.
Seek and Sell Solutions: accepting ideas and building on them; recognising difficulties.
The Counselling Contract: a commitment to action; the internal and external resources that need to be made available; specific timescales; follow-up action; knowing when to refer ‘up the line’.
Action Planning: participants plan and discuss what they will do on return to work.
