Overview

Course content


Defining Absence: the legal definition of absence; the cost to the organisation; the effects on the morale of other staff.

Causes of Absence: problems at home; task problems at work; difficult relationships at work; harassment; coping with problems; health issues – real and imagined; drink and drug related problems

Employer’s Responsibilities: complying with health and safety rules; monitoring people ‘at risk’; examining patterns of absence; stress in the workplace.

The Back to Work Interview: the structure; reviewing the situation; building rapport and showing empathy; getting to the root causes through effective questioning and listening skills; getting the person to co-operate; deciding if the problem is a disciplinary issue; offering help and guidance; knowing when to seek specialist help; developing a joint plan of action.

Follow-up: recording the agreements reached at the interview; controlling and monitoring progress.

Action Planning: participants plan and discuss what they will do on return to work

Who is it for?

People managers who have to deal with staff that are unjustifiably absent from work.
