Course content
Defining the Problem: problem analysis; understanding problems; check list method; what? who? where? when? how? and why?
Problem Solving: different types of problem; the problem-solving process; the main models in use; the difficulties experienced; defining objectives; prioritising problems; looking at key areas of concern.
The Logical Approach: collation of all relevant information; analysis and interpretation of information; strategic approach to handling problems and issues.
Technical Creativity: unlocking creativity; suspending immediate judgment; risk element; involving others in the problem and its solution.
Consider the Thinking Process: how personality helps or hinders creativity; limits to thinking; personal thinking styles; problem solving styles; being innovative.
Tools and Techniques: problem definition sheet; brainstorming cause and effect analysis; criteria ranking; flow charts; Pareto analysis; check lists; consensus reaching; rating sheets; solution effect diagram; force field analysis; metaphor and analogy.
Brainstorming: stating and restating the problem; ways to kill an idea; freewheeling; evaluation of ideas.
Evaluation of Options: how to screen each option; final selection to suit the problem; the decision.
Decision Making: the process to follow; the factors to consider; criteria to use; decision trees; decision matrix; successful team decision making; decision-making styles; gaining consensus.
Generating Solutions and Implementation: presentation and implementation of the solution; planning, progress and communication of the findings; creating the climate for change.
